About the VdM music school congresses

The music school congresses of the Association of German Music Schools (VdM) have been pioneering ideas and impulses in the field of music school education for more than 45 years, extending far beyond Germany’s borders. The Musikschulkongress 2019 in Berlin, which conveys concepts and contemporary models for the diverse areas of lively music school work, is in keeping with this tradition.

‘From practice for practice’, this guiding principle is the recipe for success at the music school congresses – and at the same time the benchmark at which the music school teachers value the value and benefits of these events. More than 1,500 trade visitors and a sustained echo in the music school landscape reflect the effectiveness of the music school congresses. The Music School Congress is a matter for the bosses: The VdM Board of Directors uses the Congress Commission, which is chaired by the Chairman. Music school directors, specialist advisors, university lecturers and the VdM federal office work together here in each changing cast. Under the aspect of the respective congress theme, they collect, assess and evaluate what has been remarkably noticed in the permanent observation of music school practice. This is how the congress program is created – participant-oriented and hands-on.

‘New Paths in Music School Work’, everywhere in over 930 public music schools with more than 4,000 locations nationwide, there are always exemplary, trailblazing ideas. With 39,000 teachers, the music schools in Germany have a considerable workforce and at the same time an immense reservoir of professional competence. This and other suggestions from professional associations and from the conservatoires go into the conception of the music school congresses. They are thus a mirror and at the same time an engine of current music school work.

An overview of the music school congresses since 1971 shows how flexible, up-to-date and also forward-looking the music school education responds to the constant change in its occupational field or also sets necessary accents. The documentaries of the music school congresses do not just inform about what could be considered “new way” at which time. They also stand for the will to continuity in change: to preserve good, so that it can become ‘proven’. They are highly interesting treasure troves for every active teacher.

Besides the congress, there are an exhibition and presentations of the exhibitors: Traditionally present numerous companies from the circle of the approximately 170 supporting members of the VdM with each music school congress a cross-section of their current offers: grades, educational works, literature, musical instruments, accessories and Music and music school software. This is also a concentrated information offer for the congress participants, who for their part represent an important multiplier group for the music industry. A professional dialogue program that is useful for both sides, but ultimately for the students of the music schools.
